Research confirms that baby loggerhead turtles are little swimmers, not simply little drifters as they move into ocean currents.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists compared the daily movement of 40 junior loggerhead turtles with data obtained on ocean currents. The turtles had actually been tracked via satellite.
The study (published in the journal PLOS ONE) showed turtles have an ability to detect current flow direction and orient themselves to swim into the currents.
It was historically thought that baby turtles have just been going with the flow – and not actually swimming. That they do nothing at all and just let the water move them along. But they are more like human babies than previously thought since this research emerged showing that these baby loggerheads actually have the natural propensity to swim when in water.
