If you’re pregnant, there are some things you may have wondered. One of them could be: Is it safe for you to swim in a chlorinated pool after your baby is here and you’re breastfeeding.
The answer is that it is FINE for breastfeeding moms to swim in chlorinated pools. Swimming is great postpartum exercise! The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention endorse this fact.
Think of things this way: If whatever you’re considering is something you would expose your baby to, then it’s something you can do while you’re breastfeeding.
The facts show that the chlorine in the pool can’t reach your breastfeeding baby in any significant amount because there just isn’t enough chlorine in the pool to do this. In order for the chlorine to enter your breast milk, it would have to be absorbed by your skin in large enough quantities to reach your bloodstream. That does not happen with the chlorine in a swimming pool. If you want to take extra precaution, you can rinse off any chlorine that might remain on your skin after swimming and before your baby feeds.
Now back to the part about postpartum swimming. It IS a great activity for getting back in shape after you’ve delivered your baby!
Swimming after childbirth helps you lose weight and restore muscle tone. It boosts your strength and energy, which may be sapped after your pregnancy and delivery.
Swimming is especially good for you because it works everything: your upper and lower body and your core. It is also low-impact and reduces the stress on your weight-bearing joints, which become looser during pregnancy.
If you decide you want to swim after childbirth, consult your doctor so that you will know the best way to proceed with this great postpartum exercise!
