Fun! Happiness! Learning!
Swimming lessons are fun and a great form of exercise. But isn’t there more that you should see in a swimming class?
Regardless of how small your child is and regardless of whether you’re in the water with your child, you should see your child’s self-confidence blossom. Learning to swim is an important life skill so a school should teach your child much more than how to make it across the pool.
You should see your child learn how to be safe in and around the water. Your child will be around all types of water across his entire lifespan. Swimming lessons – even beginning with mommy and me classes, teach children how to be safe in and around the water.
There is an important point that you – as a parent – need to understand: your child will not learn to swim in just one lesson.
It takes time and practice and plenty of it. So don’t set your expectations for immediate results. Your child will make progress at every lesson but it won’t be learning the breaststroke on the first day. Your child will start off by learning lots of basics that not only prepare him for learning more complex skills – like strokes – but also ensure that he’ll be able to sustain himself in the water. Breathing techniques, floating, and kicking are critical skills that will set your child on a progression toward swimming success. After watching your child build the basics, you will be able to see his progress into simple strokes and then more complex ones.
It also the hope of everyone at Little Otter Swim School that you will watch your child develop a genuine love for swimming and the water!
