Knowing Which is Healthiest, Twinkie or Yogurt

You may get less sugar in the Twinkie!

If you’re concerned about how much sugar your child consumes, take a look at some information shared by The Huffington Post.

Some of the most popular (and presumed healthy) yogurts – that many of you may be feeding to your children – actually have more sugar than the 19 grams in a Twinkie! Two of these offenders have lowfat and nonfat in their names – giving you a false sense of confidence in the healthiness of this as a snack.

Before you say “No way! Yogurt is healthy!” Take a look at the numbers that prove it. This is sure-fire proof that you should ALWAYS check nutrition
labels before making your purchases.

Yoplait Original Strawberry – 26 grams of sugar in 6 oz. even though it is 99% fat free

Dannon Fruit on the Bottom Blueberry – 24 grams of sugar in 6 oz.

Stonyfield Smooth & Creamy Lowfat French Vanilla – 29 grams of sugar in 8 oz.

Brown Cow Nonfat Vanilla – 25 grams of sugar in 6 oz.

Yogurt has natural occurring sugar that pushes its sugar count up. But be aware that lowfat yogurts are notorious for their high sugar levels. Making even worse, food companies add fruit in syrupy flavoring that packs quite a wallop in the sugar department – increasing the importance of reading about what you’re considering buying and eventually eating or serving to your kids.

Greek yogurt starts off with a better chance because some types of plain flavors have only 6 grams of sugar. Additional sugar is added in fruits and flavors but by reading the labels you can get a good idea of how to control high levels of sugar consumption in a snack you may consider to be healthy.

One that has as much sugar as a Twinkie and is marketed heavily as valuable to a healthy diet: Activia (blueberry flavor) which has 19 grams of sugar in on 4.4 oz!

This is a concern because The American Heart Association recommends that men eat no more than 36 grams of sugar per day, and women no more than 20. If you’re getting 29 in your lowfat creamy French vanilla yogurt, you’ve left yourself little room for other sugars before you exceed your daily allotment.
