The Secret or Key to the Ledecky-Phelps Success Factor

Everyone is all a-buzz about Katie Ledecky and – or course – Michael Phelps.

Their successes are remarkable and unmatchable.

Wouldn’t it be great to know what their secrets to success are?

No Secrets
Let’s start with Katie. This is the swimmer whose performances even stun Michael Phelps.

Katie’s secret, she says, is no secret. You just have to put in the work. At 12-0 in international finals, I think we can believe she is right.

If there is anyone who believes practice makes perfect, it is Katie Ledecky. Even at an even younger age (4th grade), she was driven. When she broke her arm playing softball, she asked immediately if she could swim with the cast. She covered it with a bag and continued her practice.

Ledecky cherishes seeing the results of her hard work in meets – also proving that what you put in is what you get out.

Awesome Statements
On to Michael Phelps. Phelps really has “keys” to success instead of “secrets.” Being the greatest Olympian of all time, he probably doesn’t have very many secrets about how he continues to be successful.

Phelps has 5 keys to success:

  1. You can’t put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get.
  2. Swimming is normal for me. I’m relaxed. I’m comfortable and I know my surroundings. It’s my home.
  3. Goals should never be easy. They should force you to work, even if they are uncomfortable at the time.
  4. If you want to be the best, you have to do things other people aren’t willing to do.
  5. Things won’t go perfect. It’s all about how you adapt from those things and learn from mistakes.

Previous Connection
If you watched the Rio Olympics, you probably remember the connection that Ledecky and Phelps have.

Ledecky was 6 and her coach was helping her to get autographs from other swimmers at a meet. Phelps was there. He was her inspiration. He gave her an autograph and Ledecky remembers how nice he was to her. At the Rio Games, Phelps high-fived Ledecky after one of her victories. She noted that her mind immediately took her back to the autograph. It’s probably the most amazing high five she’ll ever get!
