‘Already Swimming’ Children Should Take Swimming Lessons

Your child may already be swimming because you or siblings have taught them some swimming skills. If this is your situation, why should you still enroll your child in swimming lessons?

There are a few important ways an already swimming child benefits from swimming lessons.

Water Safety
Water safety is critical to our well-being throughout our lives, therefore, having basic water safety skills is important and it’s important for these to be attained when we’re young.
As kids grow up, you’re with them in the water less and less, so making sure they know what to do if something happens to them in the water. Along with this knowledge, it’s also important for your kids to know how to prevent possible water emergencies.

Swimming lessons at Little Otter focus on these things along with swimming skills.
It’s important for children to know how to:
• Always wait for an adult before going in a pool
• How to call for help if they’re having a hard time swimming
• How to act appropriately in and around the pool

Breathing Techniques
Breathing properly is one of the most important parts of swimming to master. Kids as young as 4 months are beginning to learn breathing techniques. In the beginning, the focus is on going underwater, but, little by little, focus is broadened to including being able to swim farther and farther underwater. Once kids hold their breath without concentrating on it so much, learning swimming skills is really limitless for them.

Swim Strokes
Your “already swimming” child may be able to sustain themselves in the pool, but wouldn’t you like for them to learn swim strokes so they can be better swimmers and also be safer in the water?
It’s about doing more than the doggy paddle, feeling more accomplishment than simply getting from one side of the pool to the other, and being as safe as possible in and around the water.

Learning Swimming Right From Day One
Learning to swim is a process that builds skills in layers. There are foundational skills that make it possible for more intricate skills to be attained. Learning these skills as building blocks ensures that all of the necessary skills – such as breathing techniques, limb coordination, and floating skills – are learned before a child learns to use strokes that can take him all over the pool.
