When To and When Not To Bring Sick Children to Swim Lessons

Colds and stomach viruses run rampant at all times of the year.

When your child is showing some symptoms, how do make the best decision about whether your child is in condition to attend swim lessons?

Attendance Guidelines for Sickness

Bring them if:

  • You are comfortable sending your child to school. For example, he has a little cold.
  • You know that your child’s symptoms are signs of seasonal allergies. Sniffles and a sore throat are common in this situation and don’t hamper their ability to participate in the swim lesson. Your child will be okay going to swim lessons.
  • Your child doesn’t have a fever.

If your child does exhibit some symptoms of sickness, but – according to the above parameters – can attend lessons, it’s a good idea to minimize the physical interactions your child has with other kids and pool toys.

Do not bring them if:

  • They have pink eye symptoms. Pink eye is a contagious infection and can put other children at risk if they’re in the water with your child.
  • They have stomach ailments such as nausea or diarrhea. Besides disruptions to the lesson from frequent bathroom trips, these ailments can easily spread and put all in proximity to your child at risk. One accident in the pool can spread hundreds of millions to billions of germs, according to the Center for Disease Control.

Safety is the priority in swimming lessons, whether in pool and swimming rules or health safety rules, especially where children are concerned. We help your little swimmer understand the importance of being clean and healthy before getting into the water with others.
