Swim For Your Heart: Do It In February and Beyond!

Did you know that February is Heart Health Awareness Month?

Here are five facts about Heart Health that you should know:

1. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. (Every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease.)
2. Cardiovascular diseases claim more lives than all forms of cancer combined.
3. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women and is more deadly than all forms of cancer combined. (Heart disease causes 1 in 3 women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute.)
4. Most heart disease is preventable, yet heart disease remains the number one cause of death for men and women.
5. One of the best (and recommended) ways to improve heart health is to engage in regular moderate aerobic exercise for at least 30 minutes five days a week or more vigorous workouts at least 20 minutes three times a week.

Making healthy choices is critical to having a healthy heart. Swimming is a great exercise that everyone can do that is one of these healthy choices!

Several studies have proven that swimming is one of the best types of exercise. Swimming works both your heart and lungs. Most of your muscle groups are used while swimming, leading to increased muscle strength and flexibility. Swimming is an activity that can be enjoyed throughout your lifetime because it is easy on your joints. Swimming is also a stress reliever, which is another important part of cardiovascular health.

In addition to being a skill that can save someone from drowning, it is also an activity that can save someone from a heart attack, heart disease or stroke.

That is why it’s so critical to learn to swim and to swim regularly in swim lessons, family swim times and recreational activities.
