Winter Wellness

Kids bring more than homework home from school. And this seems even worse when they go back after the winter break. They bring sneezes, sniffles, fevers, upset stomachs, and flu into your house. And it seems that even if they are immunized, they are still in danger of picking up new strains or germs that immunizations can’t protect them from.

This situation may make you hesitant to send your kids off to swim lessons because you may think:
• They will be around other who will make them sick.
• It’s too cold to be in the water.

Here are some facts to calm your fears.
1. Taking swimming lessons year round actually enhance a child’s well-being. (and yours too)

2. Swimming actually helps with respiratory problems and ailments.
Babies, toddlers and young children learn deep breathing techniques that result in:
• Increased lung capacity.
• Lungs stay clear of accumulated mucus which can lead to respiratory problems.

3. Swimming is also excellent exercise. It’s one of the best workouts a child can get. And we all know that getting good exercise makes kids and adults alike healthier. Exercising sends kids home with healthy appetites for healthy meals.

4. Swimming also contributes to them feeling tired at the end of a day – and result in wanting a full 8 or 9 hours sleep.

5. Swimming encourages healthy habits for kids.

6. The kids who want to get in the water to learn are the ones with healthy immune systems, not the ones who are sick. The kids at swim lessons will be just like your kids – ones who withstand the colds and viruses that others pick up.

Instead of giving in to initial fears, encourage your kids to swim year round and maintain their wellness all winter long.
