Do you know why swim schools are an important part of our communities and our society?
You can sum it up in two words: Water Safety.
You’ve heard the stats on drowning. You know that drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1-4.
This figure is alarming. But what is actually disturbing is the failure for many parents to not take action against this fact by doing something as simple as enrolling their children in swim lessons. Parents who fail at this are adding to the potential tragedy of this statistic.
Parents can start this process.
While parents may not be the best ones to teach their children to swim, they can start to promote water safety by teaching their children to immerse themselves in water at a young age. By instilling this water comfort zone for them, the parent can set children up for an easy learning process when they enter their first lesson. This can be done in a pool as an infant or in the tub. Beginning at 6 months is not too early but is actually the best window because the infant’s brain is just beginning to assimilate its potential fear of water. So it makes sense that doing this early can help your child to never have to “overcome” a fear of water.
Depend on the experts for lessons.
While you as a parent may know how to swim, you may not know the best route to take to teach your child those skills in ways that help them to continue to be comfortable in the pool and have confidence in their ability to be safe and learn in the water. Swim schools use progressive techniques that help children to reach water competence in stages and to become adept at the range of skills they need to safely enjoy the water and recreational swimming for the rest of their lives and potentially to go on to enjoy swimming as a sport.
