Study Aligns Swimming with the Smartest Children

Smartest Children swimming lessons

Little Otter Swim School creates and offers swim curriculum based on the idea that learning to swim benefits your child in a variety of ways. Little Otter knows that swimming improves a child’s mental abilities at the same time that it improves his or her physical abilities. Thus, while your child learns to master movement in the water, he or she is also exercising the mind.

Swimming & The Mind

The German Sports College Cologne conducted research that supports the above statements. Several years of testing revealed that swimming boosts children’s ability to concentrate. The inspiration for this study was an observation that children exposed to water play during their first few months of life had increased levels of confidence, independence, and skillful movement when compared to children unexposed to water.

Between 1974 and 1976 the Federal Ministry for Education and Science systematically tested kindergarten children in an effort to confirm initial observations about the relationship between swimming and intelligence. Children were separated into six groups. Some groups received simultaneous swim instruction and gymnastics instruction. Some groups participated only in gymnastics. One group acted as the control and attended neither gymnastics nor swim lessons. The six groups regularly attended their assigned classes for two years.

At the finish of the study, the children participating in both swim and gymnastics classes exhibited higher levels of intelligence and social skills than children who only took gymnastics classes or neither. Researchers at the Association for Training Research Cologne credit both the effects of physical development on mental development and the increased independence urged on children during swim lessons. Not only does swimming benefit a child’s mental capacities because of the relationship between body and mind, but swim classes themselves encourage the confidence and independence witnessed during the study. This confidence and independence translates into a pleasure in achievement and a desire to for intellectual stimulation later in life.

Little Otter Swim School incorporates this information into a variety of different class levels so that you child learns to swim at a comfortable pace. This allows him or her to gain the confidence and independence that will foster a lifetime of achievement.
